Sandstone care in Bronte
Bronte has some of the Eastern Suburbs' best local sandstone houses, many built of stone quarried near Waverley Cemetery. We care for it with the patience that kind of stone deserves.

Bronte falls toward its beach and park from Bronte Road, with Macpherson Street, Busby Parade and Leichhardt Street on the slopes above. The Busby Parade conservation area holds mostly two-storey freestanding and semi-detached homes from the late nineteenth century to the Inter-War years, including notable sandstone semis and freestanding houses linked to quarrying near Waverley Cemetery. Bronte House, at 470 Bronte Road and on the State Heritage Register, is a single-storey stone bungalow. Bronte Baths, the bogey hole and the waterfall in Bronte Gully are local landmarks. For our work, Bronte stone is whole sandstone facades, plus front walls, steps, footings and garden terraces set into the slope.
Bronte's sandstone houses sit on a slope facing the ocean, so the elevations that look toward the water take the brunt of every onshore wind. On facades and front walls, salt spray leaves white bloom and a gritty surface, and on the most exposed faces the stone weathers and softens. The other side of the suburb is green: Bronte Gully and its vegetation keep nearby walls and steps shaded and damp, which suits mould, algae and lichen. Where a full sandstone facade has been cleaned harshly in the past, we often see uneven colour, pale patches and orange iron staining, all of which are harder to fix than the original grime.
Bronte is in Waverley Council. The Busby Parade Conservation Area is the key heritage control here, and it specifically values the sandstone houses that give the area its character. Bronte House is individually listed on the State Heritage Register. If your home is in the conservation area or is a heritage item, check with Waverley Council before restoration work, particularly anything that changes the stone's appearance: stripping, repointing in a different mortar, replacing stones or applying a coating. Gentle cleaning is usually the least contentious step. Every method we use follows conservation practice, and a written and photographic record of the work is available if the council or a heritage adviser asks for one.
We are roughly 15 minutes from Bronte, driving from Double Bay through Bondi Junction. Many streets are steep, and houses step down the slope with stairs between levels, so our technicians carry equipment by hand and bund run-off at each level before it can flow toward the street. On full sandstone facades, we work from the top down in sections and use ladders or platforms suited to the height. Parking near the beach is busy in summer and on weekends, so weekday bookings are usually smoother. Before starting a facade, we agree with you which elevation matters most, because the ocean-facing side and the gully side often need different treatments.

Frequently asked questions
Local questions from Bronte homeowners.
Our house is sandstone from the local quarries. Is it different from other sandstone?
It is Hawkesbury sandstone, like most of Sydney's building stone, but each quarry and bed varies in hardness and iron content. We test on your stone before choosing products, rather than assuming.
Do I need approval to clean a sandstone house in the Busby Parade area?
Gentle cleaning is usually the least contentious work, but the council decides what needs approval. Check with Waverley Council, especially before anything that changes the stone's appearance.
Our ocean-facing wall is much paler and sandier than the rest of the house. Why?
Salt spray hits that side hardest and gradually weathers the surface. It may also have been cleaned more aggressively in the past. Cleaning evens out the colour to a point, but lost surface can't be restored.
Can you clean a whole sandstone facade?
Yes, working from the top down in sections with suitable access equipment. Full facades are quoted after an inspection because condition varies a lot from wall to wall.
The walls near the gully are green and slippery. What helps?
Treat the growth with a biocide and give it time, then rinse gently. Improving airflow and drainage, and trimming vegetation against the wall, help keep it from returning quickly.
Is it better to visit on a weekday?
Usually, yes. Beach parking is busy in summer and on weekends, and weekday access makes the job easier for everyone.
