Sandstone and travertine care in Clareville

Clareville looks west over the sheltered waters of Pittwater from the Barrenjoey Peninsula. Its homes are expensive, many with water frontages, and their stone sits close to the tide.

Clareville lies on the Pittwater side of the Barrenjoey Peninsula, between Avalon Beach and Bilgola Plateau, and includes Clareville Beach and Taylors Point. Hudson Parade, named after George Inglis Hudson, a chemist who bought land here for a summer retreat, follows the shore. Taylors Point reserve has lawns, a public wharf, a fenced tidal pool and dinghy storage, and near Clareville Beach the remnants of the old public wharf, demolished in 1935, are still known as Padden's Wharf. The area was subdivided for holiday homes in the 1920s and became residential in the 1950s. Houses are now expensive, many with water frontages and views, and stone appears as sea walls, boatshed steps, terraced gardens and pool surrounds.

Clareville's stone faces Pittwater rather than the ocean, so it gets less direct spray than the ocean beaches but more constant moisture. Waterfront walls and steps are wetted by tides and boat wash, grow weed and algae on their lower faces and leave a salt line where water evaporates. The west-facing aspect brings strong afternoon sun to some terraces, which bakes salt into paving, while gardens under the remnant bush on the slopes stay shaded and damp. Leaves and flowers from trees such as eucalypts stain paving with tannin. Pool terraces facing the water pick up salt from both the pool and the air. Boatshed floors and ramps may carry marks from fuel and oil.

Clareville belonged to Pittwater Council until 2016, and its heritage controls still come from the Pittwater LEP 2014, applied today by Northern Beaches Council. A conservation area was not confirmed in our research, and while sources mention heritage-listed sites in the area, we could not confirm which ones, so check your address against the heritage schedule before restoration. Under clause 5.10, council may also agree in writing that routine maintenance can go ahead without development consent. For waterfront properties, our work is limited to cleaning and sealing stone that is already there, from the land side. Sea walls, jetties and boatsheds needing repair are structural matters for other specialists. All wash water is kept out of Pittwater.

Reaching Clareville from Double Bay takes us roughly 55 to 65 minutes, via Pittwater Road and Barrenjoey Road, so jobs here are booked as full days. Many homes are on narrow, winding roads with limited parking, and waterfront houses often sit well below street level, so our technicians check vehicle access and carry routes before the job. Tide times guide when we work on the lowest steps and sea walls. Pools are covered, boats and timber decking protected, and every level of the garden is bunded so rinse water is captured. West-facing terraces can be too hot to seal on summer afternoons, so we schedule sealing for mornings or milder days when the stone is dry but not hot.

Frequently asked questions

Local questions from Clareville homeowners.

Our west-facing terrace gets very hot. Does that affect sealing?

Yes. Sealer applied to very hot stone can flash-dry unevenly. We schedule sealing for mornings or milder days when the stone is dry but cool enough.

Can you clean the steps down to our boatshed?

Usually, working from the land side at low tide and capturing rinse water. Structural repairs to boatsheds or ramps need other specialists.

Is there a heritage conservation area in Clareville?

We could not confirm one. Some properties in the area may be individual heritage items, which is a quick question for council's duty planner before any restoration.

There are oil marks on our boat ramp. Can they be removed?

Often, with a degreaser and sometimes a poultice. We contain all rinse water so nothing goes into Pittwater.

How often should waterfront stone in Clareville be cleaned?

Usually every one to two years for steps and terraces near the water, with sealer checked yearly. Shaded garden walls may need attention more often.

Where will your vehicle park on our narrow street?

We confirm this before the job and prefer to park on your property where possible to keep the street clear.
