Sandstone and travertine care in Vaucluse
Vaucluse spans the South Head peninsula, with harbour beaches on one side and ocean cliffs on the other, so a lot of its stone takes salt from both. We look after it with low-pressure cleaning and breathable sealers.

Vaucluse is one of the few Sydney suburbs where sandstone is the main historic building material rather than an accent. Greycliffe House, The Hermitage, St Michael's Church, the Wentworth Mausoleum and the Steel Point fortification are all built of it, and Vaucluse House on Wentworth Road is an 1830s Gothic-style estate now on the State Heritage Register. Today the housing is roughly half separate houses and four in ten apartments, spread from the harbour beaches at Nielsen Park and Parsley Bay across to the cliffs at Diamond Bay Reserve. On a typical property, whether off Fitzwilliam Road or Greycliffe Avenue, the stone appears as boundary walls, terraced garden steps falling toward the water, and pool surrounds facing the view.
Two exposures meet on this peninsula. Harbour-facing homes catch salt-laden wind and splash off the water, while those near the Diamond Bay cliffs take spray straight off the ocean. Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney have identified salt as a leading cause of decay in Sydney's coastal sandstone, and in Vaucluse it shows as flaking faces and white bloom low on walls and steps. Bushland is the other factor. Gardens backing onto Nielsen Park or the Hermitage Foreshore track receive a steady fall of leaves, and wet leaves leave brown tannin shadows on paving. Shaded corners under that canopy stay damp long enough for black mould and green algae to settle in, which also makes garden stairs slippery after rain.
Most of Vaucluse falls within Woollahra Council, with a small part in Waverley, so the first step with any heritage question is confirming which council your property belongs to. Woollahra lists the Bell Street Heritage Conservation Area in Vaucluse, and the suburb holds an unusual concentration of State Heritage Register items, including Vaucluse House, the Wentworth Mausoleum, Strickland House, Macquarie Lighthouse and Greycliffe House. If your home is an individual heritage item or sits within the Bell Street area, ask the council whether the work you have in mind needs approval before we begin. We apply conservation principles on every property regardless of listing: the gentlest method that achieves the result, and nothing that leaves a film over the stone.
Vaucluse is about 15 minutes from our Double Bay base along New South Head Road, traffic permitting, so inspections and follow-up checks are easy to schedule. Many blocks fall away steeply toward the harbour, which means long hose runs, equipment carried down garden stairs, and a bund at the bottom of each slope so wash water stays on the property. On waterfront lots we plan the sequence around the pool and the shoreline and protect both before any cleaner goes on. Apartment buildings get a separate plan: our technicians agree access times and work zones with the strata manager, keep shared paths usable throughout, and leave entries dry for residents coming home in the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Local questions from Vaucluse homeowners.
Our sandstone faces both the harbour and the ocean. Does it need different care?
The method stays the same, but the timetable changes. Stone exposed to ocean spray near Diamond Bay usually needs its sealer checked more often than a sheltered harbour terrace, and walls that catch both may need a maintenance clean every year or two. We set intervals after seeing the site.
How do I know whether my house is in the Bell Street conservation area?
Woollahra Council can confirm it from your address, and its planning maps show the boundary. If you are inside it, or your house is a listed item, check what approvals apply before restoration work. Our cleaning methods are low-impact either way.
Leaves from the Nielsen Park bushland keep staining our paving. Can that be fixed?
Tannin stains usually respond well to a targeted clean, and stubborn shadows can be drawn out with a poultice. A penetrating sealer then slows new stains from soaking in. Regular sweeping or blowing does the rest, because wet leaves left overnight are what cause most of it.
Do you work on sandstone stairs that lead down to the water?
Yes, where access is safe and run-off can be contained. Stone that sits in the splash zone is assessed on site. Anything structural, such as a cracked or undermined sea wall, needs an engineer and a marine contractor, and we will tell you if we see signs of that.
Can you clean the sandstone at a Vaucluse apartment building?
Yes. Front walls, entry steps and garden paths are usually common property, so we quote to the strata or building manager, agree working times and keep a safe route open for residents while we work.
How long will a clean last on a shaded garden wall here?
On a damp, south-facing wall under trees, growth can begin returning within 12 to 24 months. Treating the growth at the root, thinning overhanging plants and adding a breathable sealer where suitable all extend that.
