Darling Point is a headland suburb that follows the ridge of Darling Point Road down to the harbour, with Mona Road, Greenoaks Avenue, Carthona Avenue and New Beach Road branching off it. Carthona, built in 1841, is a harbourside sandstone mansion, and St Marks Cottage is known for its sandstone retaining walls. St Mark's Anglican Church, by Edmund Blacket, dates from 1852. Victorian houses such as Lindesay, The Swifts and Babworth House sit among apartment buildings, and Bishopscourt stands nearby. McKell Park and Sir David Martin Reserve open onto the water. Stone appears here as old boundary and retaining walls, gate piers, garden stairs, and harbour-facing terraces and pools.
Salt from the harbour is the steady background. On a narrow headland with water on both sides, few properties escape salt entirely, and the effect is cumulative over the decades these walls have stood. Old sandstone mansions and retaining walls also carry shaded faces where moss, algae and lichen take hold, particularly on the side away from the sun. Gardens established over many decades along the ridge drop leaves that stain paths. Where historic walls were repointed in hard cement during the twentieth century, we often find the stone eroding around the joints rather than the joints wearing first, which is the opposite of how it should work.
All of Darling Point is in Woollahra Council, and the council has identified several neighbourhood heritage conservation areas here, including the Etham Avenue, Darling Point Road and Mona Road areas. Lindesay, The Swifts, Babworth House and Bishopscourt are on the State Heritage Register. With this much protected fabric, it is worth confirming with Woollahra Council whether your property is a heritage item or inside a conservation area before restoration work, especially anything involving stripping coatings, repointing or replacing stone. Cleaning by gentle methods is the least invasive step, and that is where our technicians start, using sacrificial, breathable materials and keeping a photo record that can support any application.
Our technicians reach Darling Point in roughly five minutes from Double Bay. Darling Point Road is the spine of the suburb, and many properties drop away from it toward the water, so equipment is often carried down stairs and through gardens. On apartment sites we confirm parking, loading and lift use with the building manager in advance. For historic walls we work slowly in sections, letting biocides dwell and the stone dry between stages, and we photograph the condition before and after. Harbour-facing work is planned so that nothing reaches the water: bunds at the low points, vacuum recovery and protected pools.

Frequently asked questions
Local questions from Darling Point homeowners.
The pointing on our old sandstone wall is hard and grey, and the stone around it is crumbling. Why?
Cement mortar is harder and less permeable than sandstone, so moisture and salts are forced through the stone instead of the joint. The stone erodes first. Raking out and repointing with a softer lime-based mortar reverses that relationship.
Is our property inside one of the Darling Point conservation areas?
The council can check your address against its heritage maps. The suburb has several neighbourhood conservation areas and a number of State Heritage Register items, so it is worth checking before restoration work.
Can you provide a record of the work for a heritage file?
Yes. We photograph the stone before and after, note the products and methods used, and can provide that record in writing for your files or for the council.
Do you clean garden stairs that run down to the harbour?
Yes, where access is safe. Run-off is bunded at the bottom and vacuumed up so it doesn't reach the water. Any structural concerns, such as loose treads, are flagged for a stonemason.
Our gate piers have orange stains under the metal hinges. Can they be removed?
A poultice that pulls iron back out of the stone usually reduces them a great deal. Check the fixings too; corroding steel set into stone will keep staining and can crack it.
Do you work in Darling Point apartment buildings?
Yes. Many buildings here have sandstone walls and stairs or travertine terraces in common areas. We work with the strata manager on access, timing and resident notice.
