Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Narraweena

Narraweena is a quiet, hilly suburb of post-war homes in the hills behind Dee Why. Its stone needs gentle care for age, shade and garden growth.

  • Postcode 2099

Narraweena was subdivided after the Second World War, and its post office opened in 1953. It sits in the hills behind Dee Why and has a strong Italian heritage: families from Pazzano and Gizzeria in Calabria settled here, and since the 1980s a fiesta for Santo Salvatore has carried a statue from the local Catholic church through the streets. Beverley Job Park, at the corner of McIntosh and Victor Roads, is the main sporting ground, with an off-leash dog area reached from Oceana Street or The Circle. Housing is mostly houses on sloping blocks, with some newer apartments. Sandstone appears in retaining walls, front fences, steps and paved terraces.

Narraweena's slopes and gardens drive most of its stone issues. Retaining walls hold the hillside in place and stay damp at the base, encouraging algae and moss, while water seeping through can leave white efflorescence and rusty streaks on the face. Established gardens drop leaves, flowers and fruit onto paths, leaving organic stains that set if left wet. Shaded side paths and south-facing steps grow black mould and become slippery in winter. Front fences and paving that face the street pick up dust and grime. Salt spray is a minor factor here, even though the higher streets look out toward the coast, so damp and growth get most of our attention.

In the sources we checked, Narraweena has no heritage conservation area. Individual buildings can still be listed under the Warringah LEP 2011, which applies across this part of the Northern Beaches, so it is worth a look at that schedule, or a call to council, before restoration. Where newer apartment buildings have stone in shared entries or courtyards, the owners corporation is responsible for that common property and must approve work on it. Street drains here empty into creeks and lagoons without any treatment along the way, so we regard wash water as a pollutant to be captured, not something to hose into the gutter.

Expect a 35 to 45 minute drive from Double Bay to Narraweena off-peak, by our estimate, via the Spit Bridge and Pittwater Road. Residential streets are quiet and parking is usually straightforward, though steep driveways mean equipment may need to be carried. Our technicians work top-down on sloping blocks, containing and recovering water at each level. Older stone is cleaned at the lowest effective pressure after a trial patch. Where retaining walls show signs of movement, such as bulging or cracking, we stop and recommend an engineer before any cleaning. Sealing is booked once stone is dry, and noisy equipment stays within the permitted hours, never before 7am on a weekday.

Frequently asked questions

Local questions from Narraweena homeowners.

Our retaining wall has white powder and rust streaks. Should we be worried?

Both usually mean water is moving through the wall. Cleaning removes the marks, but if they keep returning, drainage behind the wall needs attention. Bulging or cracking is a matter for an engineer.

Can you clean our front fence and steps in one visit?

Usually yes. Front fences and steps are often in similar condition, and doing them together keeps the colour consistent.

Is Narraweena in a heritage conservation area?

None showed up in our sources. Your lot could still be individually listed, which the Warringah LEP 2011 schedule or Northern Beaches Council can confirm.

Our steps get slippery in winter. What causes it?

Usually algae or mould growing on shaded, damp stone. A biocide clean restores grip, and trimming plants to let in more light slows regrowth.

Do you work on apartment entries in Narraweena?

Yes. Shared entries and courtyards are common property, so we work through the strata manager and owners corporation and supply a written scope.

Will the cleaning affect our garden beds?

We cover plants, use garden-friendly products and collect the run-off so the beds stay clean.
