Sandstone and travertine care in Collaroy

Collaroy faces one of the most exposed stretches of coast in Sydney. Beachfront stone here gets direct spray and wind-driven sand, and it needs care that respects that.

Collaroy Beach forms the southern end of a continuous 3.4-kilometre stretch of sand that it shares with Narrabeen. Pittwater Road carries traffic along the length of the suburb, with beachfront homes and apartment blocks between the road and the sand. The Collaroy Services Beach Club and The Collaroy hotel sit near the southern end, and the anchor of the SS Collaroy is kept at Narrabeen Lakes Public School. Stone on Collaroy properties tends to face the sea: sandstone retaining walls and stairs down to beach access, terraces and decks built to take in the view, and pool surrounds in both sandstone and travertine.

Collaroy's exposure is well documented. In the June 2016 storms, houses on the Pittwater Road beachfront lost their backyards and were left at risk of collapse, a reminder of how much energy reaches this part of the coast. Even in ordinary weather, beachfront stone receives salt spray and wind-blown sand. Salt crystallises in the pores of sandstone and travertine and slowly breaks up the surface, which UTS research identifies as a major threat to coastal sandstone. Blown sand acts as an abrasive on terraces and wall faces. Beachfront pools add chlorinated or salt water drying along the coping in summer.

We did not find a heritage conservation area for Collaroy in our research, but listed items can exist anywhere, so before restoration on older stone, check your property against the heritage schedule with Northern Beaches Council. Beachfront lots often have additional coastal considerations because of their exposure to erosion. Our work is limited to cleaning, sealing and surface restoration of existing stone. Anything structural, such as a damaged retaining wall, failed footings or a seawall, needs an engineer and the right approvals, and if we spot warning signs, we raise them with you rather than clean over the problem.

Collaroy is roughly 40 to 50 minutes from Double Bay by road off-peak; treat this as an estimate. Pittwater Road access and parking can be tight on beachfront blocks, so our technicians check where the van can park and how equipment will reach the beach side before the day. Wind direction affects the work: an onshore breeze can blow sand and salt onto freshly cleaned stone, so sealing is scheduled for a calmer day once the stone is dry. Run-off is collected rather than allowed to drain toward the beach. Where stairs lead down to beach access, we clean from the top and recover water at each landing.

Frequently asked questions

Local questions from Collaroy homeowners.

Our beachfront terrace has a sandblasted look. Can cleaning fix it?

Cleaning removes salt, grime and growth, but it cannot replace surface worn away by wind-blown sand. If the stone is rough or uneven, restoration or, for travertine, honing may help. We will show you what cleaning will and will not change.

Do you repair storm-damaged retaining walls?

No. Structural damage needs an engineer and a licensed builder or stonemason, and beachfront work may need approvals. Once the structure is sound, we can clean and seal the stone.

How often should beachfront sandstone in Collaroy be cleaned?

Stone facing the beach usually benefits from a professional clean every year or two, plus a freshwater rinse every few weeks to remove salt before it dries in.

Is there a heritage conservation area in Collaroy?

Not that we found in the sources checked. Individual properties can still be listed, so confirm with Northern Beaches Council before restoration.

Can you clean our pool coping and the sandstone wall behind it together?

Yes. We clean each stone with suitable methods, acid-free for travertine and low-pressure for sandstone, and protect the pool throughout.

Why does wind delay sealing?

Wind dries sealer too quickly and blows sand and salt onto the wet surface, which can leave it gritty and less effective. We wait for a calmer, dry day.
