Sandstone care in Belrose

Belrose is a family suburb on the plateau north of Frenchs Forest, bordered by two national parks. Its stone deals with leaf litter, shade and bush-edge conditions rather than sea air.

Belrose is said to take its name from two local plants, the Christmas bell and the bush rose. It is primarily residential, and houses make up the great majority of sales, with about nine in ten homes owner-occupied. Garigal National Park and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park lie along its northern border, while Lionel Watts Oval and Frenchs Forest Showground mark the edge with Frenchs Forest. Glenrose Village shopping centre, Glen Street Theatre and the Belrose library serve the community, and Forest Way runs through the suburb, passing the Belrose Reservoir Bushland Reserve. Homes are mainly detached family houses, and sandstone is used in retaining walls, front steps, driveway edging and paved outdoor areas.

Belrose stone is shaped by the bush. The plateau supports remnants of the Duffys Forest ecological community, including in the bushland reserve on Forest Way, and gardens often have tall eucalypts that drop leaves, bark and gum nuts. Wet leaf litter leaves brown tannin marks on paving and steps, and where the sun rarely reaches, on the southern side of houses and toward the national park, black mould, algae and moss move in. On sloping lots, retaining walls can show damp patches and mineral streaks where water seeps through. Smoke and ash from hazard-reduction burns in the nearby parks can settle on terraces and walls. Without salt spray, organic growth and staining are the main enemies here.

Belrose homes come under the Warringah LEP 2011 for heritage purposes, the plan Northern Beaches Council took over from Warringah Council. Our research showed no conservation area in the suburb. Individual listings are a separate question, and owners thinking about restoration rather than cleaning can settle it by checking Schedule 5 against their address. Lots near Garigal and Ku-ring-gai Chase are often marked as bush fire prone, which is relevant to extensions and new landscaping more than to stone care. In the few strata schemes, shared stone belongs to the owners corporation to look after. Street drains in Belrose run to creeks inside the national parks, so our technicians keep every drop of wash water out of them.

Belrose is about 35 to 45 minutes from Double Bay, usually via the Roseville Bridge and Forest Way. Most homes have driveways and side access, so setting up is straightforward. Our technicians protect garden beds, timber decks and pool fences before applying anything, and work from the highest part of a sloping block down, with bunding and wet vacuums collecting all rinse water. Properties backing onto bushland get particular care: products stay within the boundary and nothing is sprayed toward native vegetation. Shaded paving and walls are cleaned first and sealed on a later day once dry. Because Belrose homes are mostly family houses, we give a clear time for when each area is ready to use.

Frequently asked questions

Local questions from Belrose homeowners.

Our home backs onto the national park. Is cleaning safe for the bush?

Yes, when done properly. We keep products inside your boundary, bund the downhill edge and vacuum up rinse water for disposal.

Leaves keep staining our paving. Is sealing worth it?

Usually. Sealed stone absorbs tannin far more slowly, so leaf marks sweep or rinse off more easily. Regular sweeping still helps.

Is there a heritage conservation area in Belrose?

Our research found none. If you are planning restoration, ask council to confirm whether your particular house is listed.

Our retaining wall has white streaks. What are they?

Minerals carried out of the wall by water seeping through from the soil. They can be cleaned, but they return if water keeps moving through.

Can you clean stone after a hazard-reduction burn?

Yes. Sweep loose ash off dry first, then we can lift the remaining film with a gentle clean.

How long does a typical Belrose job take?

Most homes take a day to clean, with sealing on a second visit once the stone is dry.
