Sandstone care in Allambie Heights

Allambie Heights is a post-war suburb of houses with bush on three sides. Its stone deals with shade, damp and leaf fall, and often with natural rock left in the garden.

Allambie Heights grew mostly in the late 1940s and early 1950s, and many of its streets carry names from the Second World War, among them Owen Stanley Avenue, Tobruk Avenue and Churchill Crescent. The suburb is ringed by bushland: Manly Dam Reserve lies to the south, Garigal National Park to the west, and Allenby Park, with its small rainforest pockets, creeks and waterfalls, to the north. Gumbooya Reserve holds a notable group of Aboriginal rock carvings. Allambie Road follows roughly the line of an old track toward the coast. Homes are mainly houses, and sandstone shows up as retaining walls, garden steps, rock outcrops, paving and pool surrounds.

Bushland on three sides means Allambie Heights stone is rarely short of shade or leaves. Eucalypts drop leaves, bark and gumnuts onto paving and pool areas all year, and wet tannin soaks in quickly. Tall trees keep retaining walls and side paths in shadow, where the stone stays damp and black mould, green algae and moss move in. Exposed rock and wall caps carry grey and orange lichen, which slowly roughens the surface. Gardens built around natural outcrops often have stone in contact with soil and leaf mulch, where it stays wetter still. Salt is a minor issue up here, well away from the sea, so we plan around organic growth.

We could not confirm a heritage conservation area in Allambie Heights. Depending on the lot, Northern Beaches Council works from the heritage schedule in the Warringah LEP 2011 or the Manly LEP 2013, so ask which one applies to yours before restoration. Rock carvings like those in Gumbooya Reserve are part of the suburb's Aboriginal heritage. If natural rock on your land carries engravings or grinding grooves, we will not clean it, and we suggest seeking advice before anyone does. Homes backing onto Garigal National Park or Manly Dam Reserve deserve extra care with run-off, so we keep all wash water and debris inside your boundary and recover it.

Plan on 35 to 45 minutes between Double Bay and Allambie Heights outside peak hours, by our estimate, taking the Spit Bridge and then Condamine Street or Allambie Road. Streets are residential and parking is usually easy, so planning centres on the garden. Our technicians clear leaf litter before wetting any stone, to avoid creating fresh tannin stains, and shield plants along the bush boundary. Natural outcrops are cleaned in place with biocide and a soft rinse, never blasted. Sealing is booked for after the stone has dried properly, which under a heavy canopy can take several fine days. If the property backs onto reserve land, equipment and water stay strictly on your side of the fence.

Frequently asked questions

Local questions from Allambie Heights homeowners.

Our garden has a large natural sandstone outcrop. Can it be cleaned?

Yes, gently, using a biocide on the lichen and mould and a low-pressure rinse. If the rock shows any carvings or grooves, we leave it alone and suggest you seek advice first.

Why do gumnuts leave such dark marks on our paving?

Gumnuts, bark and leaves release tannins when wet, and these soak into porous stone. A targeted clean or poultice draws them out, and a sealer slows new stains.

We back onto Garigal National Park. Are your products safe near the bush?

Products are chosen to suit a bushland setting, plants on the boundary are covered, and run-off goes into our wet vacuum, not the ground. Nothing is rinsed into the bush or onto reserve land.

Is Allambie Heights in a heritage conservation area?

We could not confirm one. Northern Beaches Council can tell you which LEP schedule applies to your lot and whether it lists your property.

Our side path stays green all year. What can we do?

A biocide clean will remove the growth. To keep it away, let in more light and air by thinning plants, and check that downpipes and sprinklers are not wetting the path.

How soon after cleaning can sealing be done?

Once the stone is fully dry. In open sun that might be a day or two; under heavy tree cover it can take longer. We check the stone itself rather than going by the calendar.
