Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Wheeler Heights

Wheeler Heights sandstone is mostly garden stone on family homes. We clean it gently, deal with past damage carefully and seal where it helps.

On a typical Wheeler Heights block, sandstone frames the garden: a front wall to the street, a few steps up to the entry, a retaining wall where the lot slopes and paving around the back. Under established trees, these surfaces collect leaf and flower stains, algae and moss. In the open, they tend to carry lichen and dust. Some older stone has a rough, furry face left by earlier pressure washing, which holds dirt and growth more readily than intact stone. Our technicians assess each surface, separate ordinary dirt from older damage, and trial a cleaner on a small, discreet patch before the whole area is treated.

We clean with biocide and time, not force. A biocide formulated for masonry goes onto the growth and stays for its full dwell time; brushing and a gentle rinse come afterwards. On stone already damaged by pressure washing, we reduce pressure further and rely more on dwell time. Leaf and flower stains get a targeted cleaner, with a poultice for deep marks. Acid and turbo nozzles are kept away from sandstone entirely. Bunds contain the wash water and a wet vacuum recovers it, so nothing is hosed into the gutter. Plants are protected throughout, and the work area is left swept and tidy before we pack up.

Sealing suits paving, steps, front walls and wall caps that dry properly. A breathable impregnating sealer slows staining and growth, and on stone roughened by old pressure washing it helps reduce how quickly dirt settles into the open surface. Walls that hold back soil are left without a sealer so they can keep drying through the face. We seal only dry stone, in light coats that leave nothing on top, and show you natural and enhancing samples first; the product and date are then logged. For most Wheeler Heights homes, a maintenance clean every two to four years, with regular sweeping in between, keeps sandstone in good order.

Frequently asked questions

Sandstone questions we hear in Wheeler Heights.

Can you clean sandstone that someone has already pressure-washed?

Yes, more gently than usual. Damaged stone gets lower pressure and longer dwell times. Cleaning will not restore lost surface, but it will not add to the damage.

Will a sealer stop leaf stains completely?

No, but it slows how fast they soak in, so most marks lift with routine cleaning. Leaves left wet for days can still stain.

Do you seal retaining walls?

Generally not. Water from the soil has to escape through the wall's face, and a sealer would hold it in and cause flaking.

How do you protect our garden during cleaning?

Plants are covered or wetted down beforehand, products are applied carefully, and run-off is collected so it does not reach the beds.
