Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Terrey Hills

Iron-rich laterite soil, heavy tree cover and acreage living give Terrey Hills sandstone its own set of stains. We identify each one before choosing how to remove it.

Terrey Hills sandstone usually carries a mix of marks rather than one problem. Near driveways and arenas there is red-brown staining from laterite soil and dust, which contains iron and binds to the stone. Under trees there is black mould, green algae and the brown shadow of wet leaves. On older walls there may be lichen, cement smears from past repairs or old paint. Some of these are surface deposits and some have soaked in, and they need different treatments. Our technicians look closely at each area, then trial a cleaner and a stain treatment on small patches and let them dry so you can see the real result before the main job.

Iron staining is handled with products made for sandstone, applied carefully and rinsed thoroughly, because the wrong chemistry can turn a light orange mark into a darker one. Mould, algae and lichen get a biocide first, with enough dwell time to work, and only then a soft brush and low-pressure rinse. Ash and soot from burning off are lifted gently rather than scrubbed in. On larger properties we work area by area, finishing and rinsing each section before moving on, and the wash water is vacuumed up so none of it drains into paddocks, dams or the bush. Animals are kept clear of the work zone until the stone has been rinsed and dried.

Once clean and dry, the stone that gets traffic or dust benefits from a breathable penetrating sealer. It slows red dust and water from soaking in, so later cleaning is mostly sweeping and the occasional wash. Walls holding back soil and natural rock features are normally left unsealed so moisture can escape. On steps and slopes, we choose finishes that keep the stone's grip, and we never apply a glossy film. We show you natural and enhancing options on a trial area first, record the products used, and suggest a yearly look at paving near driveways, where dust and soil arrive fastest.

Frequently asked questions

Sandstone questions we hear in Terrey Hills.

Why do the orange stains on our sandstone come back after rain?

Iron-rich soil is still washing onto the stone. Cleaning removes existing stains, but redirecting runoff from garden beds or driveways, and sealing, will stop them building up again as quickly.

Can a general cleaner remove laterite stains?

Usually not. Iron stains need a specific treatment chosen for sandstone. Some household rust removers are acidic and damage the stone.

Is sealing worth it on a semi-rural property?

On paving and steps near the house and driveway, generally yes. On walls and natural rock, usually not. We recommend it area by area.

Can you clean around the pool and the stables on the same day?

Often, if they are close. We plan the order so products and rinse water from one area never reach the other.
