Sandstone cleaning and sealing in Balgowlah

Much of Balgowlah's sandstone faces the street and takes traffic grime as well as garden growth. We lift both without scarring the stone.

Most Balgowlah sandstone we expect to see is street-facing: front fences, letterbox piers, entry steps and low garden walls along streets running off Condamine Street and Sydney Road. That stone takes the brunt of traffic. Exhaust film and dust settle into the texture and darken it, and where sprinklers or downpipes wet the same patch day after day, algae turns it green underneath. Further back on the block, courtyards and side paths are more likely to carry mould and leaf stains. Our technicians start by identifying which deposit sits on which surface, because grime responds to a different cleaner than mould does, and one product for the whole property rarely gives an even result.

We clean with the lightest method that works. Loose dirt is brushed off dry first. Growth gets a stone-safe biocide and enough dwell time to kill it at the root, and traffic film gets a pH-neutral cleaner suited to sandstone. The rinse uses a wide, low-pressure fan or controlled hot water. Turbo nozzles never come out, because sandstone loses grains under a concentrated jet and the scarring shows for years. Acidic brick cleaners stay off the job; they react with the iron in Sydney sandstone and leave orange stains. On street frontages we bund the kerb side first and recover the water, keeping it out of drains that run to North Harbour.

Sealing helps where stone takes traffic and spills: entry steps, paved courtyards and the top of front walls. A breathable penetrating sealer slows grime and tannin from soaking in and makes the next clean quicker. Freestanding fences in good condition can go either way, and we explain the trade-off on site. Retaining walls get no sealer, because the soil behind them pushes moisture out through the face. Where old cement repairs are speeding up erosion, a sealer will not fix it, and we say so and suggest a stonemason. You choose the look from two trial patches, one natural and one enhancing, and we note the product used for your records.

Frequently asked questions

Sandstone questions we hear in Balgowlah.

Will cleaning remove the black streaks under our letterbox pier?

Streaks that run down from a cap or pier are usually algae or grime carried by rainwater. Biocide and a gentle scrub normally remove them, and a sealer on the cap reduces how quickly they return.

Is high-pressure cleaning ever right for sandstone?

Not with a concentrated jet. Low pressure with a wide fan, or controlled hot water, does the job without stripping the surface. A pale, furry finish is the sign that stone has been cut by pressure.

Do you need to use our water?

Usually yes, from an outside tap, with trigger shut-offs and only as much as the method needs. Sydney Water's Water Wise Guidelines allow hard surfaces to be washed where there is contamination such as mould or staining.

Can sealing stop traffic grime building up?

It slows it. Grime sits on the surface instead of soaking in, so it washes off more easily. Walls beside a busy road will still need periodic cleaning.
