Travertine cleaning and sealing in North Bondi

Travertine on a North Bondi terrace gets salt from the ocean air and the pool at once. We clean it without acid and seal it to cope with both.

Travertine around North Bondi pools and terraces tends to age in the same sequence. The holes in the stone lose their filler and fill with sand and grime. Coping beside the water darkens and stays damp. Then the surface along the edges turns rough and pitted as salt crystals grow inside the pores. Ocean-front homes near Ben Buckler see this faster than most, because spray settles on stone that is already wet from the pool. A deep clean, refilling and sealing at the early stages keeps the original pavers in place and avoids the cost of lifting and replacing pieces later.

Travertine is a form of limestone, so acid has no place on it. Many pool-shop scale removers and general patio cleaners are acidic and leave dull etch rings that only honing can remove. Our technicians use alkaline cleaners made for calcium-based stone, work them into the holes using a slow machine with soft pads, and rinse gently. A cover goes over the pool first, and run-off is collected rather than allowed into the water or onto the garden. Any etching is pointed out to you on a walk-around at the start, because that is a honing job and we prefer to tell you before the work rather than after.

Once clean, the travertine needs to dry completely, which on an exposed terrace can take a couple of fine days. We fill open holes with a colour-matched filler, then apply a penetrating sealer formulated for salt exposure in thin coats, wiping off any excess so nothing stays on the surface as a film. The stone keeps its texture and grip under wet feet. You will know before we leave how long the pool and outdoor furniture should stay off it, and the product and date go on your job record. From then on, sprinkle a little water on the coping each summer: if it darkens and soaks in instead of beading, the sealer needs renewing.

Frequently asked questions

Travertine questions we hear in North Bondi.

Our travertine coping has gone rough near the pool edge. Why?

Salt from the pool water and the ocean air crystallises inside the stone as it dries. Sealing slows it; pieces that are badly pitted may need honing or replacement.

Can you work while the pool is full?

Yes. The pool is covered or protected and we work from the deck, recovering wash water so it cannot run into the pool.

Will a sealer make our travertine slippery?

A penetrating sealer leaves no film, so the grip of the surface is largely unchanged. We avoid glossy coatings around pools.

There are dull rings on our travertine. Can they be cleaned off?

If they are residue, yes. If an acidic product etched the stone, the area needs honing and resealing instead.
